Saturday 17-24 August 2019with Lora Avedian and Selvedge Magazine

About the Workshop

Colourful folk costumes and traditional ceremonies are the inspiration behind the stumming hand embroidered work of artist, designer and prop maker Lora Avedian.  On this workshop Lora shows you how to exploit the three dimensional qualities of textiles with embroidery and other embellishment techniques, using nature and the local landscape as your muse.

Our floral focussed workshop begins with observational drawing in the Château gardens recording the plants and flowers using single line, mark making and collage techniques. This careful looking sows the seeds for future work and participants will be encouraged to examine the flowers, their patterns and petals, considering scale, colour and construction.

Back in the studio Lora will show you how to develop these drawings three dimensionally through a variety of techniques including embroidery, appliqué, silk painting and smocking. You’ll employ a combination of hand and machine embroidery to create your work, incorporating fringing, buttons and knots for additional effect.  The treatment of stems, leaves and stamens will all be taught.

We take a break mid- week to enjoy a day of dyeing with woad, the original blue dye from the woad plant grown in the Toulouse area since medieval times. You can bring things to dye from home, pick items up at local markets or buy natural fabric from Chateau Dumas.

During the week there will also be a visit to the nearby atmospheric Sunday morning food and craft market in St Antonin-Noble-Val, the medieval town where the films Charlotte Gray and The Hundred Foot Journey were filmed.
