Enquire About AvailabilityLife is a Rich Tapestry

Saturday 18-25 July 2015with Fiona Rutherford and Selvedge

About the Workshop

The rich tradition of telling a story through weaving is the inspiration behind our workshop with tapestry artist Fiona Rutherford. During this fascinating workshop - which is open to all levels including beginner - you will complete a woven tapestry that tells a story or captures a personal memory.

The opportunities for creativity and personal expression in tapestry weaving are limitless and so the week begins with experiments with colour and shape to loosen up the imagination and introduce the various tapestry techniques. You will have a set of small tester samples to keep as a permanent reference from this session.

Using light wooden tabletop looms and working with cotton and linen yarn Fiona will teach you how to “warp up” and knot and how to weave shade and texture into your work using a palette of coloured yarns.   All the basic weaving skills will be covered during the week including how to maintain an even tension and how to cut a tapestry from a loom to finishing warp ends and mounting your work.

You will be encouraged to develop your own ideas and with Fiona’s guidance and advice you will hone your final design. The beautiful natural landscape in and around the chateau could be an ideal starting point for your design or you might bring an object with you to help generate ideas for your personal story.

A day of dyeing with woad - the plant that gave us the original blue colour and which is indigenous to the area around Toulouse - is also part of week.  You will be able to dye small pieces of natural fabric as well as your own yarn during the class and incorporate some of the blue yarn into your weaving project.  By the end of the week you'll have a beautiful finished tapestry,  a set of tester samples and a selection of dyed items and the knowledge and confidence to start your own weaving projects.

We will also visit the Sunday morning farmer's market in medieval St Antonin-Noble-Val during the week as well as other interesting sideshows that present themselves!

Fiona Rutherford

Fiona uses a historical technique to weave tapestries for contemporary interiors. Using mainly cotton and linen yarns she weaves with a vivid colour palette and simple imagery to create her distinctive visual narrative.

Much of her recent work is inspired by her travels in Japan. She has exhibited her work worldwide and her tapestries are held in major public collections.
