Enquire About AvailabilitySummertime Blues: Shibori with Indigo and Woad Dyeing

Saturday 22-29 August 2015with Jane Callender and Selvedge magazine

About the Workshop

Explore the exciting possibilities of indigo shibori resists and dye techniques with shirbori shibori master Jane Callender (www.callishibori.co.uk) and Selvedge magazine (www.selvedge.org).

Anyone interested in exploring techniques for textile surface decoration will love this workshop.  Jane will show you how to create beautiful patterns and textures, from organic meanderings to crisp liner designs using the many resist dye techniques that the engaging process of shibori has to offer.

You will be shown the basics of stitch resist and how to develop a stitch resist pattern using Jane’s specially designed stencils for motifs : fold and clamp – itajime, cylinder wrapping – bo maki shibori, including arashi, as well as several binding methods will all be demonstrated and taught.

You’ll learn to prepare an indigo vat (organic and other) and how to use it in conjunction with an iron rust dye bath and natural tannin to achieve beautiful shades and effects.  Working on natural cotton, linen and silk you’ll create pieces for cushion covers, patchwork, bags and other projects.

The workshop is structured to ensure you receive a complete introduction to shibori techniques while still allowing you the flexibility to ‘do your own thing’.  Jane has designed a stitched and bound pattern and this will be available for you to work with during the week should you choose to do so.

Indigo has superseded woad as the blue dye of choice, but in medieval times woad was the original source of the colour blue throughout Europe. You’ll have the chance to observe and note the different dye practices during a day of dyeing with woad expert dyer Denise Lambert.

The workshop includes a visit to the atmospheric market in medieval St Antonin as well as other spontaneous sidetrips.
