About the Workshop

Take the slow road to creating unique hand-stitched collages with Mandy Pattullo, a textile artist who uses tattered and worn fabrics to create works of art reminiscent of the "make do and mend" culture of past times.

On this workshop you'll learn the techniques and processes behind Mandy's signature style and how old quilts and garments are unpicked, cut up and darned then layered, worked on and hand-stitched in place with embroidery and appliqué.  Utility patchworks and quilts made by women in domestic settings are a particular favourite and Mandy's own collages bring together precious fragments to form evocative compositions.

You'll begin by building up your own textile collage using fabrics you've brought with you or sourced locally together with a piece of old quilt provided by Mandy. You'll learn about composition, altering the surface, boundaries and colours while experiencing the freedom of the collage technique. You'll revisit some basic embroidery stitches which you'll use sensitively to create a layer of mark making on your collage.

The workshop also covers structured appliqué techniques,  how to design and prepare templates and work up an English paper patchwork technique to create focal points and motifs within a collage.  Mandy shares her knowledge and sources of inspiration and will help you to work up a piece referencing folk art designs and patterns.

You'll have the opportunity mid-week to dye with woad, a locally-grown plant that produces a beautiful denim-like blue. We'll use our dyed cloth to piece together work which refers to Japanese Boro textiles.   As well as other pieces we'll make a small fabric book which will connect us to the intimacy of the materials themselves, their history and the stories they tell.  Mandy makes hers in to old-fashioned wallets and you too will create a small heirloom which will be a memento of your stay.

We will also visit the Sunday morning farmer’s market in medieval St. Antonin-Noble-Val during the week as well as any other interesting sidetrips that present themselves!

Mandy Pattullo

Textile artist Mandy Pattullo's training as a surface pattern designer has led her to work with old and worn fabrics and scraps. She re-cycles and reuses very old and often disintegrating materials in her patchworks. Her work relates to the thrift and ‘make- do and mend” culture of past times, in particular utility patchworks and quilts made by women in domestic settings. Mandy’s collages, bring together precious fragments to form evocative compositions.
