About the Workshop

Bring your adventurous sewing dreams to life next summer by joining Linda Lee and The Sewing Workshop in southern France. Discover new talents and hone your skills by immersing yourself in garment sewing wonder. This week can be described as the perfect balance of luxurious living, slow-paced and refreshing creativity, yet inventive and lively sewing.

In this workshop you’ll dive into a set of skills that center around the art of modern garment sewing. Work intimately with Linda and her extensive creative knowledge. Guests will create a customized selection of her loved garment patterns from the Collection, and leave having dyed with woad and have created hand-stitched samplers.

Begin with a one-day adventure in learning the process of natural dyeing with woad alongside world-renouned artist Denise Lambert. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to dye beautiful specialty fabrics such as linen, velvet, cotton and silk to use in your upcoming sewing projects. You’ll learn about the process of woad and how it came to be, and tackle the hands-on dyeing process by dipping your pieces into the blue vats.

Nancy Shriber, founder of Contemporary Sashiko and piecing expert, is joining the workshop as guest artist and teacher. Nancy will guide you in building a Stitch and Piecing Journal, a personal book that you can work on throughout the workshop in the contemplative setting of the chateau or with other students in the studio.  She will introduce you to the hand stitching art forms of sashiko, kantha and boro, lending an inspiring hand as you manipulate fabric fragments, exploring different methods of attachment and piecing, using an assortment of beautiful threads and other bits and pieces. Materials will be provided for your journal of stitched experiences in cloth.

Once you’ve explored these techniques and treats, the rest of the week is about creating your personal wardrobe pieces. Linda will teach her innovative sewing methods and walk alongside you as you create and master your custom Sewing Workshop attire. Choose up to $225 retail value in your patterns and fabric, we’ll bring them along with us and have them ready for you when you arrive. Linda will cover all knowledge in regards to garment preparation, fit, construction, pattern alteration and design.  For further information and the suggested itinerary for the week please see www.sewingworkshop.com/events/chateau-dumas.

During the week we also visit a local fleamarket and the nearby atmospheric Sunday morning food and craft market in St Antonin-Noble-Val, the medieval town where the films Charlotte Gray and The Hundred Foot Journey were filmed.

Linda Lee

Linda’s training and experience as an interior designer has come in handy as she travels the country teaching the art of combining beautiful fabrics for the fashion –conscious home sewer. Along with teaching fitting skills and fine sewing techniques, she is known for designing patterns under the name of The Sewing Workshop, a line of patterns for the modern sewer who is interested in architecturally interesting styles to flatter with flare.

Along with six talented staff members, she operates out of her pattern-making studio in Topeka, Kansas, where you will find a huge inventory of fabrics that are sold online. She produces a monthly series of inspirational tutorials called Sew Confident! in which she breaks down the latest fashion trends into real-life sewing experiences for people who want to sew better than they can buy.

With nine Craftsy classes and 13 books under her belt, Linda has the depth of experience and enthusiasm needed to pass on the fine art of sewing clothes to her students.
