About the Workshop

Artist Mandy Pattullo returns to Chateau Dumas this summer with a wonderful workshop inspired by her best-selling book "Textile Collage". During the week you'll work in a number of different styles, explore ideas for slow stitching and produce some unique stitched pieces based on an animal or bird portrait as well as a still-life inspired collage. You'll become absorbed in appliqué, patchwork and embroidery, working with pieces of old quilts mixed in with some vintage French finds.

Mandy will use the local wildlife to spark your imagination.   You might spot a deer, badger, hare, or red squirrel on a walk around the Chateau or, if you are lucky, you'll be woken by one of the resident barn owls and you'll certainly see plenty of birds and butterflies in the grounds. Mandy will teach you how to build up a portrait of one of these animals or birds onto a piece of old quilt using tiny bits of fabric and hand stitching to mimic the fur and feather effect.  An ability to draw isn't necessary as Mandy will show you how to make a template.

On Tuesday you'll build up a small textile collage based on still life paintings of pots on a table, flowers in vases and window sill arrangements. Mandy is passionate about the paintings of Winifred Nicholson and you'll be encouraged to look at her paintings and those of Mary Fedden, Elaine Pamphilon and Ben Nicholson for inspiration. You'll create your own still life design - working initially with paper shapes and then using the serendipity of the fabrics available -  and play with texture and composition to create surface decoration using stitch marks rather than paint strokes.

In the middle of the week we learn about woad, a dyer's plant which is inextricably linked to the area and produces a beautiful range of denim-like blues. You can bring things to dye from home, pick items up at local markets or buy natural fabric at the Chateau. You'll come away with a beautiful pile of woad dyed cloth with which to create a series of tiny collages made up of stitching and rough patchwork informed by Boro textiles, a textile tradition based on mending and darning using simple repetitive stitches to suggest movement across the surface of the fabric. You might like to extend these little samples in to a simple book form, a tiny bag or brooch.

This week is made even more perfect with a visit to a local fleamarket as well as a Sunday morning visit to the farmer's market in the medieval town of St Antonin-Noble-Val.

Mandy Pattullo

Mandy Pattullo is a Textile Artist based in Northumberland, England.  She trained as a surface pattern designer and moved into teaching full-time. When she left teaching she chose to develop work with the old and worn at its heart. She cuts up old quilts and garments, unpicks them, darns and constructs new textile collages usually embellishing with simple embroidery and traditional appliqué.

Her work relates to the thrift and ‘make-do and mend” culture of past times, in particular utility patchworks and quilts made by women in domestic settings. The viewer is forced to re-examine fabrics that have become flawed through wear and tear, to find in them a new beauty. In 2016 mandy published a best selling book called "Textile Collage" revealing her inspiration and techniques.
