Saturday 19-26 August 2017with Christine Mayer and Selvedge Magazine

About the Workshop

Most of us has more than one piece of vintage clothing in our wardrobe that has special meaning to us.   We may not wear these pieces all that often, but we love to handle them from time to time and try them on, enjoying the memories that this evokes.   We treasure them for the beauty of the fabric, the print, the cut or design and these familiar and beloved pieces have a unique way of connecting us to our past.

What if you could take these treasured vintage pieces and reinvent them? If you could only modify them and make them somehow more contemporary – wouldn’t that be gift?

You can learn to do exactly that on our workshop with Berlin-based fashion design Christine Mayer. Christine has built a fashion career on re-purposing clothing and breathing new life into old garments.   She is a pioneer of three-dimensional free draping with fabric, an art form she has adapted and developed from her studies in classical Japanese drapery.

Working directly onto a mannequin that is a replica of your body shape, you’ll learn from Christine how to drape and stitch in an artful way to create original items of clothing that will fit you like a second skin.  This fresh and liberating way of making clothes brings with it a new set of rules which has far more in common with sculpting than dressmaking.   It won’t take long for you to understand the principles of working three-dimensionally and you’ll enjoy the process of allowing your garments to evolve.

You might have a much-loved blouse with a beautiful print, a vintage piece with gorgeous stitched detail or a worn leather belt with a retro buckle.  As long as you have a personal connection to the piece you have chosen you should bring it with you to the workshop.

Midway through the week we’ll enjoy a day of dyeing with woad - the original blue made popular in medieval times -  and have the chance to use these dyed pieces in your work.  Add to your stock of materials some locally-sourced French vintage clothing, lace or decorative textiles that you might find on our outing to a fleamarket and you’ll want for nothing.  Also part of the week is a visit to the Sunday morning market in the medieval town of St Antonin-Noble-Val.

Christine Mayer

Christine Mayer is considered a pioneer in the upcycling of garments and her first collection was almost completely made of recycled materials. Her work is characterized by sustainability, social responsibility and a holistic awareness.

She has worked as a costume designer for several theatres and opera houses and won two fashion awards in Berlin in 2004 and founded her own fashion brand: MAYER. Peace Collection. In 2012 she expanded her collection and created "Into the Light“,  a series of garments, created completely independent of the seasonal rhythm of the fashion industry.
