Saturday 19-26 August 2017with Rachel Hazell and Selvedge Magazine

About the Workshop

It’s often said that everyone has a book in them and it's the aim of travelling bookbinder and artist Rachel Hazell to bring a very personal book out of you on this workshop.  It won't be a novel though, but a handbound artbook overflowing with stories told in fabric and woven in thread, ribbon and decorative stitchery and incorporating found text and brocante ephemera picked up from fleamarkets.

Rachel travels the world creating bookish experiences and exploring different ways to tell a story through form, drawing on the local landscape for inspiration. A trained book-binder and printer, she is au fait with all the traditional skills and techniques but she doesn’t always play by the rules and her approach to her artwork and teaching is playful and experimental.

In this workshop you’ll work on one main book project, filling the pages using scraps of paper and fabric and bringing them alive with text and texture, paints, inks and dyes. Beginning with simple folds you’ll explore book structures and story-telling through form and stitching. You’ll be encouraged to create unique page surfaces using ink, rubber stamps and collage and to play with text and textured calligraphy.

No background in bookbinding is required to join the week and under Rachel’s patient guidance you’ll learn all the binding techniques you’ll need for this workshop,  including folding and sewn book structures.  You’ll learn to stitch the spine of your book using a series of little "kiss" stitches.

During the week we’ll have a day of dyeing with woad, the blue dye from the leaves of the woad plant which was grown throughout the area around the Chateau since medieval times.   Added to this itinerary will be visits to a local farmer’s market in an atmospheric medieval town as well as to a local fleamarket where you can scour stalls for finds for your book project.

Rachel Hazell

Rachel has over fifteen years of experience taking people on creative journeys. She holds workshops across the world – from Venetian palazzo to lighthouses in Shetland.  For inspiration she draws on the beauty of paper, the familiarity of a well-thumbed book, shorelines, flea markets and foreign cities; She launched her online e-course PaperLove in 2014 to enable people to work with her to develop their creative ideas and techniques. Rachel is regularly commissioned; her favourite projects include a 2m high book sculpture for fashion designer Helen Storey and a window display for Conran.
