Enquire About AvailabilityTravelling Yarns: Knitting with Habu Yarns

Saturday 9-16 September 2017with Cocoknits and Habu Textiles

About the Workshop

Come away to southwest France on a knitting adventure with a difference.  Learn to tailor hand-knit garments using beautiful Japanese Habu yarns while you tour the French countryside and discover the beauty of the Quercy.

This wonderful week is led by knitwear designer Julie Weisenberger from cocoknits with  a “yarn tasting” day offered by Takako Ueki, owner of  Habu textiles. We’ll take our knitting on the road with us as we visit markets in the medieval town of St Antonin-Noble-Val and historic Cahors strolling, exploring and soaking up the atmosphere.

Advanced beginners and experienced knitters are equally welcome to join the week. We’ll start with a basic cardigan or pullover pattern designed by Julie who’ll show you how to chart your pattern to make customization easy for future projects.   You’ll learn English Tailoring and how to achieve a flattering set-in sleeve using Julie’s original top-down, seamless construction techniques.

Takako arrives at the end of the week to host a "yarn tasting" party which allows you to experiment with yarns such as paper, ramie, pineapple, as well as her extraordinary cottons, linens and wools. Takako will talk to us about how she sources her amazing yarns at small, specialty mills in Japan.

You will choose your yarn in advance of the workshop from a select range of Habu yarns. After guidance from Takako and Julie you will pre-order the yarn and bring it with you to the Chateau.  You will also have the opportunity to purchase other, specialty yarns which we will have on-hand.

As well as visiting a selection of lovely villages in the area we’ll visit our local farmer’s market with chef Charlotte Clement followed by a hands-on cooking demonstration.

The goal is that by the end of the week everyone will have completed the yoke of a perfectly-fitted cardigan or pullover with instructions to finish the body and sleeves once back home.  You will also leave with some cooking recipes and ideas and the sense that you have explored and come to know a little of our corner of France.

Julie Weisenberger

Julie Weisenberger, founder of Cocoknits, learned to knit in Europe and ran a small sweater company in the 80’s selling to boutiques across the US.  Her main focus, however, has been  on designing for and teaching hand-knitters of all shapes and sizes.  She has perfected the top-down, seamless method using English tailoring to achieve a flattering and perfectly fitted set-in sleeve sweater.  Her simple silhouettes combined with Habu’s unusual yarns result in elegant, wearable designs for knitters of all abilities.

Takako Ueki

Takako Ueki of Habu Textiles is a New York-based weaving studio, gallery, and importer of Japanese and Asian yarns. Habu focuses on quality materials, unusual textures, and subtle, often monochromatic coloring. It's all about the quality and experience of the materials themselves, not about flashy packaging or marketing hype.

Habu Textiles has a strong cult following due mostly to the quality of the yarns which include cashmere, wool, bamboo, paper, silk, ramie, guanaco, stainless steel amongst others.
